Mayor Brandon Johnson Decides Not to Attend Slain Officer’s Funeral

After initially stating that he would attend the funeral of slain Chicago Police Officer Enrique Martinez against the wishes of the grieving family, Mayor Brandon Johnson has now reversed his decision less than 24 hours later.

Johnson’s office released a statement on Saturday announcing that the mayor will not be attending the funeral in order to give Martinez’s family and the CPD family the space to grieve.

The family of Officer Martinez had made it clear that they did not want the mayor or governor to attend the funeral. While the governor respected their wishes promptly, Johnson had initially insisted on attending as part of his commitment to honoring all fallen first responders.

State Rep. Angelica Guerrero-Cuellar personally delivered the family’s wishes to both the governor and the mayor, with the governor immediately honoring the request while the mayor did not respond initially. Johnson’s chief of staff was also criticized for not understanding the message delivered by Guerrero-Cuellar.

Upon hearing the news of Johnson’s decision to not attend the funeral, Bryan Zarou from the Better Government Association expressed frustration at the mayor’s office for not making obvious decisions in a timely manner.

It is crucial for public officials to respect the wishes of grieving families during such difficult times, and Mayor Johnson’s reversal on attending Officer Martinez’s funeral is a step in the right direction towards honoring the fallen officer and his family.
