For Julien Emery, addressing access to legal services has been a deeply personal journey.
Emery is the CEO and co-founder of Superpanel, an innovative platform designed to help law firms streamline the onboarding process for new clients.
His motivation stems from significant personal encounters with legal issues. As a Canadian, he faced challenges in obtaining affordable legal help. He recalls a traumatic event involving his motherâs car accident, which, although tragic, brought financial support through legal means that sustained his family for years. Recognizing the cumbersome legal intake processâwhere law firms assess new clientsâ casesâhe saw the potential for improvement.
âFor clients, itâs often an overwhelming experience filled with endless forms and phone calls, leading many to abandon the process before they receive assistance,â Emery explained in an interview with TechCrunch. âFor law firms, this translates to a costly bottleneck filled with opportunities for errors.â
Initially, the complexity of the legal intake process was deemed unsuitable for automation, but the advancement of artificial intelligence has revolutionized that perception. Before founding Superpanel, Emery honed his skills at Hootsuite and later launched Allay, an insurance underwriting platform that successfully exited to Novo Benefits. In 2024, he collaborated with his AI-expert friend Dingyu Zhang to establish Superpanel.
According to Emery, Superpanel automates about half of the legal intake duties, efficiently managing the collection and feedback processes. The platform acts as a âdigital teammateâ for plaintiff law firms, aiding in escalation and ensuring compliance. âIt interacts with clients via phone, texting, email, and forums, guiding them through their narratives and facilitating document sharing,â he elaborated. âFor legal firms, it classifies case types, jurisdictions, and necessary documentation.â
âWhen ambiguity arises, our system prompts a human team member to intervene,â Emery added. âThe outcome is a cohesive, multi-channel workflow that produces tangible results and offers firms a reliable system akin to having a dedicated employee.â
Upcoming TechCrunch Event
San Francisco | October 27-29, 2025
In a recent development, Superpanel announced a successful seed funding round of $5.3 million, co-led by Outlander VC and Field Ventures. Emery noted that several investors in this funding round were connections from his previous startup, who then introduced him to the lead investors of this new venture. Other notable participants include LOI Venture, co-founded by Hootsuiteâs founder, Zenda Capital, 8-Bit Capital, and Behind Genius Ventures.
We plan to utilize the funding to enhance hiring efforts and broaden the capabilities of Superpanel for our plaintiff law firm clients,â Emery stated.
The legal sector is currently experiencing significant changes driven by innovations in artificial intelligence. In this competitive landscape, Superpanel is positioned alongside other players like Clio Grow, LegalClerk.ai, MyCase, and Whippy.ai.
However, Emery believes Superpanel has a unique value proposition. âTodayâs consumers expect immediate, self-serve solutions shaped by AI technologies and their daily online experiences,â he remarked. âSuperpanel is designed to consistently guide them throughout their journey.â
