Lt. Col. William “Skate” Parks, an Air Force F-16 commander, was recently awarded the Silver Star for his courageous actions during a high-risk mission in the Middle East. The mission involved flying into a heavily defended air-defense zone, dodging enemy missiles for 15 minutes, and crippling enemy ballistic missile production facilities. Parks’ leadership and decisive actions not only saved the lives of his wingman but also prevented the loss of two American aircraft.
During the mission, Parks led a four-ship of F-16 Fighting Falcons on a Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) mission, drawing enemy fire to clear a path for the rest of the force. Enemy forces fired a barrage of missiles and anti-aircraft fire at the F-16s, triggering a sequence of high-G maneuvers and countermeasures. Despite being low on fuel, Parks coordinated an emergency rendezvous with tankers to keep the jets airborne and reach safety.
Gen. Ken Wilsbach, Air Force chief of staff, presented Parks with the Silver Star, emphasizing the rarity of such an honor. Only 96 Silver Stars had been awarded to Department of the Air Force personnel before Parks’ ceremony. Parks also received the Bronze Star Medal during the event.
Parks’ deployment focused on countering Iranian-backed militants and hostile drone and missile threats across the region. His squadron recorded 108 aerial victories against enemy drones and land-attack cruise missiles, setting a modern Air Force record. Parks is credited with pioneering cost-saving tactics and successfully defending against deadly surface-to-air missile engagements.
During a ceremony at the Pentagon, Parks expressed the emotional journey of the mission, from the initial loneliness over hostile territory to the relief of hearing friendly voices on the radio as he escaped the threat. The award holds special significance to Parks due to his family’s deep aviation legacy spanning multiple generations of Air Force service.
Overall, Lt. Col. William “Skate” Parks’ bravery and skill in the face of danger exemplify the valor and dedication of the men and women serving in the U.S. Air Force.
