Alaskan GOP Calls for Recount After Ballot Measure to Repeal Ranked-Choice Voting Falls Short by Just 0.1%! |

The Alaska Republican Party has announced its intention to pursue a full recount and thorough review of the closely contested election results for Ballot Measure 2. This measure sought to eliminate Alaska’s open primary system and implement ranked-choice voting in general elections.

Following the completion of the election, the results showed a narrow defeat for the measure, with the “No” vote leading by a mere 0.1% margin, equivalent to 664 votes out of over 320,000 cast. The Alaska GOP, in collaboration with the Republican National Committee, has decided to request a recount to ensure the accuracy of every vote and to guarantee the integrity of the electoral process.

Ballot Measure 2 aimed to overturn Alaska’s controversial ranked-choice voting system and open primaries, which were established after a referendum in 2020. Under this system, the top four candidates in a nonpartisan primary, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the general election.

In a notable past election, Democrat Rep. Mary Peltola secured a surprising victory in Alaska, becoming the first Democrat in 50 years to win a House seat in the predominantly red state. Her win was attributed to ranked-choice voting, which allowed her to defeat Sarah Palin in a special election to replace Rep. Don Young.

The slim margin of victory in the recent election has prompted the Alaska GOP to call for a recount, backed by the Republican National Committee. The party has enlisted the services of the Dhillon Law Group, led by Harmeet K. Dhillon, a recognized expert in election law, to oversee the recount process. The goal is to ensure a fair, transparent, and thorough review of the election results.

The Alaska Republican Party, along with its partners, is committed to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that every vote is accurately counted. The Alaska GOP’s decision to pursue a recount demonstrates their dedication to preserving the democratic principles of fair and free elections.
