Oscar-nominated actor Alec Baldwin has reignited a longstanding debate among Beatles fans with his recent comments about the relationship between John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney. The discussion was sparked by a video showing a 1969 Beatles rehearsal during the band’s Let It Be recording sessions at Twickenham Film Studios in London.
In the footage, Lennon and McCartney can be seen smiling, joking, and sharing a microphone as they rehearse the song Two of Us, with Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono, watching nearby. Baldwin left a comment on the video, suggesting that it was evident that Lennon and McCartney were in love, insinuating that a third party may have intervened to put an end to their relationship.
Yoko Ono has often been blamed by some fans for contributing to the Beatles’ breakup, and Baldwin’s remarks tap into a recurring theory within the group’s fandom that Lennon and McCartney may have shared a romantic bond. The historical context of the time, with homosexuality only recently partially decriminalized in the UK, adds depth to the speculation that has persisted for decades.
Despite the speculation, respected Beatles biographer Ian Leslie has previously dismissed the idea of a sexual relationship between Lennon and McCartney. In his book John and Paul: A Love Story Told in Songs, Leslie concluded that while there was an “erotic component” to their connection, it remained non-sexual.
Lennon and McCartney are widely believed to have shared a deeply intimate but ultimately platonic relationship that began in their teenage years in Liverpool in 1957. Their public falling out and the subsequent breakup of the Beatles continue to be subjects of debate more than five decades later.
Following Lennon’s tragic murder in 1980, McCartney initially offered a restrained reaction, simply stating, “Well, it’s a drag.” However, two years later, McCartney paid tribute to his old friend through the song Here Today, expressing his love and gratitude for Lennon’s presence in his life.
Baldwin, a devoted Beatles fan, has hosted tribute programs on SiriusXM and even interviewed McCartney in 2020 on what would have been Lennon’s 80th birthday. Praising McCartney as one of the greatest singers in world history, Baldwin continues to celebrate the enduring legacy of the iconic band and its members.
