The Magical World of Alexia Ulibarri: Exploring Feminine Intuition and Ancestral Wisdom
The latest collection from Alexia Ulibarri opened with a striking look – a sculptural, two-layer balloon skirt paired with a cropped, high-neck leather cape top. This set the stage for the dramatic and enchanting designs that followed. Drawing inspiration from the classic medieval Spanish novel, La Celestina, Ulibarri aimed to delve into the realms of feminine intuition and ancestral wisdom.
Throughout the collection, the concept of embracing one’s dark side, emotions, and magic was vividly portrayed. Pieces ranged from T-shirts boldly emblazoned with the word “bruja” (witch in Spanish), to voluminous tulle skirts with asymmetric cuts, to reimagined corsetry that accentuated the hips without compressing the female form. Masks also made an appearance, seamlessly merging with the garments and becoming extensions of the female silhouette.
The color palette oscillated between sky blue and black, with pops of fuchsia pink – a hue deeply rooted in Mexican culture. The collection embodied the idea of duality, of existing in multiple places at once.
Reflecting on her early days in the industry, Ulibarri tapped into nostalgia for this collection. Starting her career 15 years ago with tulle as her primary fabric due to budget constraints, she began creating voluminous and experimental pieces. Today, she leads a workshop of over 20 women, showcasing the strength and creativity of the feminine force that drives her work.
