The 2025 Cannes Film Festival was a whirlwind of excitement, with a plethora of highly anticipated film releases making their debut on the iconic Croisette. From established auteurs like Julia Ducournau and the Dardenne brothers to rising stars hoping to take home the prestigious Palme d’Or for the first time, there was no shortage of talent on display.

One of the most talked-about aspects of the festival was the impressive lineup of performances from actors like Jennifer Lawrence in “Die My Love,” Paul Mescal in “The History of Sound,” Wagner Moura in “The Secret Agent,” and Renate Reinsve in “Sentimental Value.” These performances were not only in contention for awards at Cannes, but also poised to make a splash during the upcoming awards season.

The stakes were high at this year’s festival, especially considering the success of last year’s Palme d’Or winner, “Anora,” which went on to win the best picture Oscar. With several past Cannes winners also receiving accolades at other prestigious awards ceremonies, the pressure was on for this year’s contenders to deliver standout performances.

The final day of the festival was not without its challenges, as a mass power outage across the region threatened to disrupt proceedings. Thankfully, a generator kept the lights on at the Palais des Festivals, allowing screenings and press conferences to continue as planned. The electricity was restored just in time for the closing ceremony, which brought the event to a dramatic and satisfying conclusion.

In terms of awards, there were a few surprises in store for attendees and filmmakers alike. Jafar Panahi took home the coveted Palme d’Or for “It Was Just an Accident,” while Joachim Trier won the Grand Prix for “Sentimental Value.” Other winners included Oliver Laxe for “Sirât” and Mascha Schilinski for “Sound of Falling,” Kleber Mendonça Filho for Best Director for “The Secret Agent,” and Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne for Best Screenplay for “Young Mothers.” Nadia Melliti was awarded Best Actress for her role in “The Little Sister,” while Wagner Moura received Best Actor for “The Secret Agent.”
