The two delved into Mack’s 12 years in the NXIVM cult and the aftermath of her arrest and prison time for her involvement with leader Keith Raniere.
During the interview, Mack shared that the dysfunction and illegal activities within the cult didn’t become apparent until the eighth or ninth year of her involvement. She described the grooming process as a form of an abusive relationship, where red flags were ignored due to justifications provided by the group. Following her arrest in 2018, Mack was placed on house arrest for three years and had to participate in numerous interviews with prosecutors and police. She described the experience as walking through hell and feeling like she was losing her grip on reality. Despite facing isolation from many people in her life, Mack leaned on her family and close friends for support during this challenging time.
Mack also revealed moments of suicidal ideation, particularly when she was hiding in Mexico after Raniere’s arrest and during her house arrest. Despite the overwhelming darkness and pain she experienced, Mack ultimately chose to hold on for the sake of her loved ones.
Reflecting on her feelings towards Raniere, Mack admitted that she’s still processing her role as both a victim and a perpetrator. She acknowledged his evil actions but expressed that forgiveness is a complex journey that she is still navigating.
