AllTrails, the popular hiking and biking companion app that was awarded 2023’s iPhone App of the Year, is introducing a new premium membership called “Peak” with enhanced features. Priced at $80 per year, this subscription will bring AI tools for creating custom routes, real-time trail condition forecasts, trail traffic heatmaps, and a unique feature that allows users to identify trees and plants using their phone’s camera.

The Peak membership will first be available to select members in the coming weeks and will be accessible to all users worldwide by June. Those interested can sign up for early access on the AllTrails website.

Having recently raised $150 million in a growth round in 2021, AllTrails has seen a surge in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic as more people turned to outdoor activities. However, the company faced competition from Apple, which integrated topographic maps and other outdoor features into Apple Maps in the U.S.

The new features in the Peak membership are aimed at engaging and active users, with AI-powered tools to create personalized trails and detailed trail condition forecasts. The app will also provide alerts for air quality, mosquito activity, and upcoming terrain conditions like pavement, gravel, or mud.

One standout feature of the Peak membership is the heatmap option, which uses user activity data to estimate trail traffic. This can be helpful for users who prefer less crowded trails or those who value safety in numbers while hiking alone.

Additionally, Peak members will have access to the Outdoor Lens feature, allowing them to identify and log trees, plants, and flowers instantly within the app. Over time, more identification features will be added to enhance the user experience.

In conjunction with the Peak launch, AllTrails is updating its Base and Plus memberships. The Base membership remains free and includes trail maps, community reviews, and navigation. The Plus membership offers additional features such as offline access, wrong-turn alerts, 3D trail previews, and live trail activity sharing.

Both Base and Plus memberships will now include Points of Interest, featuring over 500,000 mapped viewpoints, landmarks, and trail amenities. Plus subscribers will also benefit from the Offline Area feature, allowing them to download customized areas for offline exploration with high-resolution maps and other detailed information.

Overall, AllTrails’ latest updates and the introduction of the Peak membership demonstrate the company’s commitment to providing a comprehensive outdoor experience for its users. With a range of new features and enhancements, AllTrails continues to be a valuable resource for outdoor enthusiasts around the world.
