Peter Friedlander Joins Amazon MGM Studios as Head of Global Television

Peter Friedlander, previously the head of scripted television for the U.S. and Canada at Netflix, has been appointed as the new head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios. He is set to officially begin his new role on October 6.

After parting ways with Netflix in August following a remarkable 14-year tenure, Friedlander will succeed Vernon Sanders, who resigned as the head of television earlier this month.

Friedlander began his journey at Netflix in 2011, initially taking on the role of director for the original series team. He quickly climbed the ranks to become the vice president and later led the scripted content division. During his extensive career at Netflix, he was instrumental in the success of early groundbreaking series such as “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black,” in addition to overseeing contemporary hits like “Wednesday,” “Monster,” and “Bridgerton.” Prior to joining Netflix, he worked as an executive at Tom Hanks’ renowned production company, Playtone.

The announcement of Friedlander’s new position was conveyed in a memo to the staff by Mike Hopkins, the head of Amazon MGM Studios and Amazon Prime Video. Below is a portion of the memo:

Team,

I am excited to announce that Peter Friedlander will be joining Amazon MGM Studios as our new head of global television. In this capacity, Peter will manage our original TV lineup in the US as well as oversee our global tentpole productions, MGM Television, and MGM Alternative. Peter comes to us after leading Netflix’s scripted series division for the past four years, where he significantly contributed to the evolution of their original programming. His experience includes a remarkable range of successful titles, including “Wednesday,” “Bridgerton,” “Monster,” “Ozark,” “Emily in Paris,” “The Queen’s Gambit,” “Stranger Things,” “The Night Agent,” “3 Body Problem,” and “Black Mirror.”

Peter was the inaugural dedicated original series hire at Netflix, helping to launch their first wave of shows, such as “House of Cards” and “Orange Is The New Black.” Before Netflix, Peter was associated with Playtone, where he produced the Emmy-nominated drama “Big Love” and contributed as a creative executive on multiple feature films. He initiated his career on film sets, gaining experience on notable projects such as “Road to Perdition” and “Austin Powers in Goldmember.”

I am eager for Peter to meet all the teams and start making an impact from Day 1, which will be Monday, October 6. Please join me in welcoming Peter to Amazon and congratulating him on this new chapter.

-Mike
