Amazon Introduces Faster Delivery Options for U.S. Customers
NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon has announced the launch of faster U.S. delivery options for selected products, catering to the growing demand for speedy shipments. The e-commerce giant now offers expedited delivery of pantry staples, clothing, over-the-counter medications, cleaning supplies, and electronics for a fee.
The move comes as Amazon faces increased competition from Walmart and aims to meet customers’ expectations for quick and convenient delivery services. The company is now providing customers in over 2,000 cities, towns, and suburban areas with the option to receive orders from its inventory of 90,000 items within three hours.
Amazon Prime members can avail of this service for $4.99, while nonmembers will be charged $14.99. Additionally, one-hour delivery slots are available in various locations, including major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, as well as smaller cities such as Des Moines, Iowa, and Boise, Idaho.
According to Udit Madan, senior vice president of worldwide operations at Amazon, the company saw an opportunity to leverage its operational expertise and delivery network to enhance customer convenience and value for Prime members.
Amazon, which launched its Prime program in 2005, initially offering free two-day delivery on a limited selection of items, has since expanded its offerings to over 300 million items across 35 categories. The company has utilized robotics and artificial intelligence technology to streamline order fulfillment processes and regionalize its U.S. delivery network into eight areas to reduce delivery times.
Furthermore, Amazon is testing an ultrafast delivery service, Amazon Now, in select cities in India, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, as well as in several U.S. and UK communities, with the goal of delivering orders in 30 minutes or less.
Competition in the Fast Delivery Space
Rival retailer Walmart has also been focusing on enhancing its delivery services, offering same-day deliveries in under three hours to 95% of the U.S. population. The company has expanded its drone delivery capabilities in partnership with Alphabet’s Wing division, with plans to increase drone delivery locations to 270 by 2027.
Target, in an effort to boost sales, has been ramping up its faster delivery options through partnerships with Shipt and testing new shipping models. The retailer now provides same-day delivery via Shipt to 80% of the U.S. population, with 80% of orders delivered in three hours or less.
