Moscow:
A meeting of the five nuclear weapons states, including Russia, the United States, China, France, and Britain, is set to take place in New York within the next two weeks, as reported by Russian state media citing Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Thursday.
The gathering, which brings together the major nuclear-armed states and permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, does not have a specific date announced yet, nor the level of officials who will be in attendance.
This meeting holds significant importance amidst the escalating nuclear tensions between Russia and the West, particularly since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict.
President Vladimir Putin recently made changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, expanding the scenarios that could trigger the consideration of nuclear weapon use by Moscow.
Back in January 2022, prior to Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine, the “nuclear five” collectively emphasized the importance of preventing war among nuclear powers and reducing strategic risks as their top priorities.
The statement issued by the group highlighted the stance that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.”
