Toddlers are often known for their fearless and adventurous behavior, and it turns out that chimpanzee toddlers are no different. Researchers have found that chimps between the ages of 2 and 5 are more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as free-falling from tree limbs or leaping wildly from branch to branch in the forest canopies. This behavior decreases as the chimps get older, with roughly 3 percent reduction each year after the age of 5.

Biologist Lauren Sarringhaus from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., compares human and chimpanzee parenting patterns. Chimp mothers typically parent alone, with no help from fathers, grandmothers, older siblings, or other group members. Chimps cling to their mothers for the first five years of their life, but by age 2, they begin to explore independently. In contrast, humans have a more communal approach to parenting, with various caregivers beyond just parents, including teachers, coaches, and other adult figures.

The rise of intensive or helicopter parenting in the Western world has led to a decrease in unsupervised playtime for children, unlike previous generations. This shift has sparked interest among researchers in how caregiving influences risk-taking behavior in both humans and chimpanzees.

Sarringhaus and her team studied over 100 chimpanzees in Uganda’s Kibale National Park, ranging in age from 2 to 65. They observed the chimps as they swung through the tree canopy, noting how often they lost contact with tree branches. They found that younger chimps were much more likely to attempt daring maneuvers compared to older chimps. Chimp “teens” ages 10 to 14 also engaged in risky behaviors more often than adults.

While these risky maneuvers come with a tradeoff, as roughly a third of chimpanzees show evidence of previous bone fractures, the behavior highlights the similarities between human and chimp toddlers as they navigate the world around them with a sense of adventure and fearlessness. When it comes to exploring their environment, toddlers are known for their fearless and adventurous nature. They seem to have no fear of falling or getting hurt, which can be attributed to their malleable bones and lighter weights. Just like smaller chimps, toddlers are less likely to suffer grave injuries from falls compared to larger individuals.
