The controversy surrounding California’s proposed ‘Billionaire’s Tax’ has taken a bizarre turn this week, with plans for a “March for Billionaires” in San Francisco gaining attention. Initially thought to be a hoax, the event’s organizer, Derik Kaufmann, has confirmed that the march is indeed happening this Saturday. Kaufmann, the founder of AI startup RunRL, expressed concerns about the potential impact of the wealth tax on the tech economy.

The Billionaire Tax Act, introduced last year, would require Californians with a net worth of over $1 billion to pay a one-time 5% tax on their total wealth. While supported by the state’s healthcare union SEIU, the legislation has faced backlash from prominent figures in the tech industry, some of whom have threatened to leave California. Kaufmann believes that the tax would disproportionately affect startup founders, forcing them to liquidate shares and incur capital gains taxes.

Despite the outrage, Governor Gavin Newsom has already stated that he would veto the bill if it were to pass. The ongoing debate has sparked online conversations and skepticism about the effectiveness of the proposed tax. Kaufmann’s planned march, expected to have a few dozen attendees, has been met with both incredulity and ridicule on social media.

It remains to be seen how the ‘March for Billionaires’ will unfold, but one thing is certain: the debate over California’s ‘Billionaire’s Tax’ is far from over. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
