The atmosphere outside the New York Supreme Court Criminal Term at 100 Centre Street was tense on that chilly Friday morning. With the wind making the already cold 31-degree weather feel like 19 degrees, the scene was set for a dramatic day. As I arrived at the courthouse with my watercolor pencils and sketch paper in hand, I was surprised to find only a handful of journalists and supporters present. It was evident that some dedicated individuals had been lining up since the early hours of the morning to secure a spot inside the courthouse.

Once inside, the press area was abuzz with anticipation. Two lines had formed – one for photographers and another for reporters. The courtroom door bore the sign “Part 96,” adding to the air of mystery and tension. As I nervously made my way to the 15th floor, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of the momentous occasion.

The hallway leading to the courtroom was a mix of journalists, supporters, and law enforcement officers. Supporters of Luigi Mangione, mainly young women aged 18 to 35, stood out in the crowd with their burgundy court sweaters, a symbol of solidarity with the accused UnitedHealthcare CEO shooter. The energy in the hallway was palpable, with everyone awaiting the start of the hearing.

As the minutes ticked by, the nervous energy in the room continued to build. Photographers tapped impatiently on their cameras, eager to capture the moment. The heat in the hallway became stifling, adding to the tension of the situation. Finally, Luigi’s lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, made her entrance, greeted by cheers from supporters and flashes from the press cameras.

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was electric. Luigi’s lawyers sat in the front row, while Karen Agnifilo paced the room, exuding confidence and determination. The famous courtroom sketch artist Jane Rosenberg was also present, capturing the scene with her talented hand. As Luigi entered the room, all eyes were on him. Shackled like a character from a movie, his stoic demeanor belied the gravity of the situation.

The hearing proceeded with Karen Agnifilo passionately defending her client against accusations made in a recent HBO documentary. The tension in the room was palpable as she sparred with the judge over the admissibility of certain evidence. Outside the courtroom, the sound of supporters chanting “Free Luigi!” added to the intensity of the moment.

And just like that, it was over. Luigi exited the courtroom, leaving a trail of emotions in his wake. Supporters marveled at having seen him up close, their excitement palpable. As I packed up my sketching materials, I couldn’t help but reflect on the gravity of the day’s events and the impact they would have on all involved.
