The rooftop of TRAMES, an artistic and cultural center in Dakar, Senegal, has been transformed by a vibrant new installation created by artist Mateo. Using paint and stencils, Mateo incorporated motifs familiar in Senegalese culture, such as traditional wrestling, bird tracks, fish, and wax fabrics. The installation aims to create a welcoming atmosphere above the hustle and bustle of the city.

Inspired by the concept of teraanga, a Wolof word that embodies the philosophy of generosity and acceptance, Mateo’s work celebrates the open-heartedness and interconnectedness of Senegalese communities. This holistic approach to hospitality has been a defining aspect of Senegalese culture for centuries, shaping the way people interact and engage with one another.

Initially planning to paint a mural during his residency at TRAMES, Mateo was inspired by the communal rooftop space and decided to create a large patterned carpet instead. This carpet, symbolizing the teraanga ethos, serves as a space for connection and ritual, inviting people to come together and celebrate Senegalese culture.

Mateo’s work on the rooftop terrace of TRAMES reflects his intention to create a vibrant and symbolic space for gatherings, celebrations, and dance rituals. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors of the installation pay homage to the rich cultural heritage of Senegal and highlight the importance of community and connection in everyday life.

To see more of Mateo’s work, visit his website and Instagram profile. The artist’s dedication to celebrating Senegalese culture and promoting positive values like teraanga through his art is truly inspiring. The installation on the rooftop of TRAMES serves as a visual representation of the warmth and hospitality that define the Senegalese way of life.
