Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is fighting back against sexual harassment allegations by suing a former aide, Charlotte Bennett. Cuomo, 67, filed a notice of claim seeking compensatory and punitive damages for defamation after Bennett accused him of asking invasive questions about her personal life and sexual relationships.
Bennett recently dropped her federal harassment charges against Cuomo, prompting him to take legal action to clear his name. Cuomo’s lawyers argue that Bennett’s claims are false and defamatory, pointing to evidence uncovered during her federal lawsuit.
Despite not filing a formal legal complaint yet, Cuomo’s legal team is determined to prove that Bennett’s allegations are baseless. They also highlight a statement made by Bennett’s attorney, Debra Katz, claiming that Cuomo sexually harassed her client.
This move is part of a larger legal battle Cuomo is facing, with three women suing him over sexual harassment claims. Taxpayers have footed the bill for much of Cuomo’s defense, as state law allows former politicians to use campaign funds for legal fees related to their time in office.
In addition to the lawsuit against Bennett, Cuomo is also facing legal action from Brittany Commisso and an anonymous state trooper. The ongoing legal battles have cost New Yorkers around $16 million so far.
Despite criticism of his taxpayer-funded defense, Cuomo remains determined to clear his name. Bennett is also suing the Governor’s office directly over her harassment and retaliation claims, with the case still ongoing.
