During a heated debate at John Jay College, top New York City mayoral candidates Andrew Cuomo, Zohran Mamdani, and Brad Lander clashed with each other, exchanging sharp criticisms and accusations.
Mamdani, a socialist state Assemblyman, wasted no time in delivering pointed blows against frontrunner Cuomo, while Lander focused on Cuomo’s past sexual harassment scandal that led to his resignation in 2021.
Despite Cuomo denying the accusations and calling them politically motivated lies, the tension continued to escalate throughout the debate.
Lander also brought up Cuomo’s handling of nursing home deaths during the pandemic and challenged him to apologize to a man whose father died from COVID-19 in a nursing home.
The debate took personal turns, with Mamdani correcting Cuomo’s mispronunciation of his name and Lander accusing Cuomo of mistreating immigrant workers during the pandemic.
As the candidates traded barbs and attacked each other’s policies and records, the debate highlighted the divisions within the Democratic primary race for mayor of New York City.
With just 12 days left until the primary election, the candidates are making their final pitches to voters, with alliances forming and attacks intensifying.
The debate also touched on issues such as Israel’s conflict with Hamas, with Mamdani expressing support for the BDS movement and facing criticism for it.
Cuomo, facing scrutiny over his campaign funding and lack of mosque visits during his time in office, tried to defend himself against the barrage of attacks from his opponents.
As the debate concluded, the candidates left with lingering tensions and unresolved disputes, setting the stage for a contentious race in the final days leading up to the primary.
