Andrew Windsor’s Marriage to Sarah Ferguson: A Look Back at Their Turbulent Relationship
The union between Andrew Windsor and Sarah Ferguson quickly faced strain, with royal life exposing deep cracks in their relationship. Sources revealed that Andrew’s naval duties often kept him away for long stretches, with one year seeing him at home for just 42 days.
During a particularly infamous moment, an insider disclosed that Andrew bluntly told Ferguson, “I am a Prince, then a naval officer, then a husband.”
This stark prioritization, coupled with rumors of Andrew’s affairs, ultimately led to Ferguson’s decision to separate from the then-Duke of York. Reports suggested that Andrew had been involved with more than a dozen women within the first year of their marriage, while Ferguson’s friendship with Texas oilman Steve Wyatt also raised eyebrows.
In 1992, a tabloid photograph depicting Ferguson in a compromising position with her financial advisor added further public pressure, prompting the couple to announce their separation shortly after.
The divorce between Ferguson and Andrew was finalized in 1996, with the former duchess later describing the split as a pragmatic move. “I wanted to work – it’s not right for a princess of the royal house to be commercial,” she explained, emphasizing that the decision was based on practical considerations rather than personal animosity.
Despite their separation, Ferguson has maintained a close relationship with her ex-husband. She continues to stay at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, describing it as a place of convenience rather than a home. “I travel a lot, and I’ve always been able to make wherever I am home… when I’m in the UK, I’m lucky enough to stay at Royal Lodge. I wouldn’t call it my home as that would be presumptuous,” she previously stated.
However, recent developments have indicated that Ferguson and Andrew have been ordered to vacate the $40 million Lodge by February. Despite Andrew’s public scandals, including a 2022 settlement with Epstein sex trafficking victim Virginia Giuffre over sexual assault allegations, Ferguson’s loyalty to her ex-husband remains unwavering.
“I think the love I had for him then is the love I still have for him now,” Ferguson expressed. “We’re the happiest divorced couple in the world… we’re divorced to each other, not from each other. My duty is to him. I am so proud of him. I stand by him and always will.”
A source close to the couple shed light on Andrew’s behavior, stating, “Andrew’s declaration about his priorities to Sarah is typical of him. He is an egomaniac who doesn’t care who he hurts. It is no wonder she divorced him.”
