Former Bonobos CEO Launches Social App to Help People Make Friends
Andy Dunn, the founder of online fashion retailer Bonobos, is embarking on a new venture aimed at tackling social isolation. In a recent interview with JS, Dunn shared his vision for a social app called Pie, which is designed to facilitate real-life connections among its users.
Since its inception, Pie has secured an impressive $11.5 million in Series A funding and has attracted over 130,000 monthly active users in cities like San Francisco and Chicago. However, as the app’s user base continues to grow, the challenge of fostering meaningful interactions at in-person events has become increasingly prominent.
One of the key issues Pie faced was the difficulty for attendees to navigate crowded events and identify potential friends. Dunn acknowledged this challenge as an opportunity for innovation, stating, “This is the beauty of building a startup – a solution creates a problem.”
To address this issue, Pie acquired a tool called Sparked Connections, developed by event organizers Samir Mahafzah and Sam Stubbs. This AI-powered quiz analyzes users’ responses to personality prompts and groups them into clusters of six individuals who are likely to connect well with each other.
At events like “Coffee with Strangers,” participants take a short quiz before the gathering, answering questions on topics ranging from personal beliefs to lifestyle preferences. The algorithm then matches users based on their responses and initiates group chats to facilitate pre-event introductions.
Dunn emphasized the role of AI in enhancing social interactions, noting, “Without the AI inflection point, I think it would be an almost unsolvable problem.” By leveraging technology to predict compatibility and foster connections, Pie aims to mitigate the impact of loneliness and strengthen interpersonal relationships in a digital age.
As societal concerns about loneliness continue to rise, the integration of algorithms into social platforms may offer a valuable solution for individuals seeking meaningful connections. While the idea of using AI to make friends may seem unconventional, the success of apps like Pie demonstrates the potential of technology to bridge gaps and cultivate authentic relationships.
