Tragedy struck at a bus stop in Papatoetoe over the weekend as a man who was assaulted has sadly passed away in hospital.

This incident marks the second fatal assault at an Auckland bus stop recently, following the death of US student Kyle Whorrall in Meadowbank over Easter weekend.

The victim in Papatoetoe was discovered with severe head injuries in Auckland on Sunday.

“Unfortunately, the man, aged in his 60s, lost his battle with his injuries last night,” Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Hayward confirmed today.

A man is set to appear in court today on assault charges, with the possibility of further charges being added.

Det Snr Sgt Hayward stated that the police do not believe this was a random attack, as both individuals had prior interactions.

“Nevertheless, this tragic incident has resulted in the loss of a life.”

The victim’s identity is currently being withheld by the authorities.

“We are providing support for the family during this challenging time,” Det Snr Sgt Hayward assured.
