Anthony Hopkins Opens Up About His Battle with Alcoholism
At 87 years old, legendary actor Anthony Hopkins has revealed the dark depths of his struggle with alcoholism. In a recent interview, he confessed that at his worst, he was teetering “at the brink of hell,” admitting, “I used to space out and hallucinate. I was a lunatic, very hyper and manic. I was drinking all the time to kill the discomfort and self-contempt.”
But it all came crashing down on December 29, 1975.
“I was driving over canyons, blacking out, not knowing where I was going. In the mornings, I would wonder, did I kill somebody? And I would check the front of my car,” Hopkins recalled.
He vividly remembered a mysterious moment of clarity that followed.
“It was 11 o’clock precisely – I looked at my watch – and this is the spooky part: Some deep, powerful thought or voice spoke to me from inside and said: ‘It’s all over. Now you can start living. And it has all been for a purpose, so don’t forget one moment of it.'”
Anthony Hopkins’ story is a powerful reminder of the struggles that many individuals face with addiction.
