Users Upset Over Usage Limits on Claude Code
Since Monday morning, Claude Code users have been hit with unexpectedly restrictive usage limits, causing frustration among heavy users of the service, particularly those on the $200-a-month Max plan. Complaints have been voiced on Claude Code’s GitHub page, with users expressing confusion and dissatisfaction over the sudden changes.
Users are now receiving messages stating “Claude usage limit reached,” with a reset time provided, usually within a few hours. However, without any official announcement of altered limits, many users believe their subscription has been downgraded or that their usage is being incorrectly tracked.
One user on GitHub expressed their frustration, stating, “Your tracking of usage limits has changed and is no longer accurate. There is no way in the 30 minutes of a few requests I have hit the 900 messages.”
An Anthropic representative acknowledged the issues but provided no further details, only stating, “We’re aware that some Claude Code users are experiencing slower response times, and we’re working to resolve these issues.”
The sudden change in usage limits has been alarming for users who received no prior notice or guidance on what to expect. One user shared that their project progress came to a halt since the limits were enforced, emphasizing that there are no comparable alternatives to Claude Code’s capabilities currently available.
These issues coincide with broader problems within Anthropic’s network, as many API users reported overload errors. The company’s status page also indicates multiple issues over the past few days, despite showing 100% uptime for the week.
Anthropic’s pricing system, which sets tiered limits without guaranteeing a specific level of access, has caused confusion among users who were unaware of being subject to usage limits. The most expensive Max plan, priced at $200 per month, offers limits 20 times higher than a Pro subscription. However, the lack of transparency in setting absolute usage limits leaves users uncertain about when their service will be restricted.
Concerns Over Max Plan Sustainability
The $200 Max plan has been popular among heavy users, but some doubt its sustainability for Anthropic in the long run. One user mentioned that the plan allows them to make over $1,000 worth of calls in a single day, leading them to expect more restrictive usage limits. However, clear communication from the company regarding these changes is crucial to maintain user confidence.
