A recent spate of antisemitic attacks in Australia has left the Jewish community in Melbourne living in fear and demanding action from authorities. The attacks included an arson incident at a synagogue and a violent raid on an Israeli-owned restaurant, prompting concerns about rising extremism in the city.

The first attack took place outside the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, where assailants set a fire near the entrance while around 20 worshipers were inside having dinner. Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished, but the incident has raised concerns about the safety of Jewish institutions in the city.

Avi Yemini, a reporter for Rebel News Online, highlighted the swift response of the fire brigade in preventing further damage to the synagogue. He also mentioned a previous firebombing incident at another synagogue in the city that remains unsolved.

Later that same evening, a group of masked extremists targeted the Miznon restaurant, throwing chairs and glassware while chanting anti-Israel slogans. The violence escalated quickly, with diners fleeing for safety as protesters caused chaos inside the establishment.

Despite one protester being arrested by Victoria Police, concerns remain about the safety of the Jewish community in Melbourne. Another incident involving the destruction of vehicles and graffiti on a nearby wall is also being investigated by authorities for potential antisemitic motives.

Alex Ryvchin, co-CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), condemned the attacks and called for unity in denouncing such acts of violence. He emphasized the need to confront and address the underlying ideology driving these attacks, urging for a strong response from law enforcement.

Gideon Sa’ar, the Israeli minister of foreign affairs, also expressed outrage over the incidents and called on the Australian government to take decisive action against antisemitism. The ECAJ reported over 2,000 antisemitic incidents in Australia between October 2023 and September 2024, highlighting the urgent need for measures to combat hate crimes.

The recent attacks have underscored the growing concerns about extremism and intolerance in Melbourne, with calls for unity and solidarity in standing against antisemitism. It is imperative for authorities to address these incidents promptly and ensure the safety and security of all communities in the city.
