Antisemitic Sign at Barstool Sports Bar Draws Outrage

In a Philadelphia bar owned by Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, patrons who opt for bottle service are given the option to customize letter boards with messages of their choice. These messages can range from playful phrases like “break up with him” to spirited declarations like “go birds!” However, a recent incident at the bar took a dark turn when a Temple University student requested staff members to arrange the letters on his sign into an antisemitic message. According to Mr. Portnoy, the sign contained a four-letter expletive directed at Jewish people.

This incident is particularly troubling considering the rise in antisemitic episodes across the United States. In the 12-month period from October 2023 to September 2024, the Anti-Defamation League reported over 10,000 antisemitic incidents, triple the number from the previous year. These incidents encompassed verbal or written harassment, vandalism, and physical assault, with the majority involving cases of verbal or written harassment.

Following the incident at Barstool Sansom Street, the bar issued a statement condemning the customer’s actions as “deplorable.” Mr. Portnoy revealed in an Instagram video that two customers were involved in the incident. The bar attributed the incident to “misguided” employees who disregarded the company’s training and zero-tolerance policy for discrimination and hate, leading to their termination.

Temple University took swift action in response to the incident, suspending the student believed to be involved and launching an investigation. University President John Fry emphasized that antisemitism has no place at Temple and reiterated the abhorrent nature of such behavior.

In a surprising turn of events, Mr. Portnoy, who is Jewish himself, initially expressed outrage over the incident in a profanity-laced video on Instagram. However, he later opted to send the young men involved on a tour of Auschwitz, a Nazi death camp where around 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were murdered. This gesture, although unconventional for Mr. Portnoy, aimed to turn a heinous incident into a learning experience.

While Barstool Sansom Street did not provide a comment on the incident, Mr. Portnoy declined to comment further, citing his reluctance to engage with the media. It is worth noting that Mr. Portnoy has faced criticism in the past for making racist and misogynistic remarks, underscoring the complexities surrounding his public persona.

Overall, the incident at Barstool Sansom Street serves as a stark reminder of the persistence of antisemitism and the importance of combating discrimination in all its forms. It highlights the need for continued education and awareness to foster a more inclusive and respectful society.
