A group of progressive Democrats is teaming up with bipartisan efforts to block President Donald Trump from getting involved in Israel’s conflict with Iran. The conflict began when Israel targeted top Iranian officials on Friday, just before planned talks between Iran and the U.S. on denuclearization.
The resolution, led by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and set to be introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), aims to prevent U.S. involvement in the conflict. Rep. Massie announced the plan on X, formerly Twitter, urging Congress to follow the Constitution when deciding on matters of war.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) both expressed support for the resolution, highlighting the need for congressional approval before engaging in war. Rep. Tlaib emphasized the need to avoid repeating past mistakes, referencing the false information on weapons of mass destruction that led to the Iraq War.
The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran has drawn criticism from various quarters, with concerns over destabilizing the Middle East. Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced the “No War Against Iran Act” in the Senate to underscore Congress’s authority to declare war. Sen. Tim Kaine also filed a war powers resolution to demand congressional input on Trump’s decisions regarding Iran.
Trump’s abrupt departure from the G7 summit to address the conflict highlights the seriousness of the situation. He urged Tehran residents to evacuate immediately, further escalating tensions in the region.
