Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) did not mince words when addressing the recent retreat by Chuck Schumer and several Senate Democrats regarding the Continuing Resolution (CR) related to President Trump.
Ocasio-Cortez expressed her discontent to reporters, stating, “Some members of Congress have taken significant risks to win in Trump-dominated districts, all in the name of protecting the American populace… only to see certain Senate Democrats even consider yielding to Elon Musk. This is a profound slap in the face, and it leaves many feeling betrayed.”
The New York Congresswoman emphasized that Senate Democrats still have the opportunity to reconsider their stance.
She issued a stern warning to Schumer regarding the implications of his decisions: “One day, the Senate will find itself needing the House to advance legislation.”
The justification for the actions of a faction of Senate Democrats appears tenuous at best. The overwhelming majority of Senate Democrats seem poised to filibuster the CR, yet notable figures like Schumer, Gillibrand, and Ossoff seem ready to back it.
What some Senate Democrats are contemplating is lamentable, though there are more senators, such as Slotkin and Murray, who have opted to oppose it.
House Democrats are not the only ones who might make these Senate Democrats rethink their choices; the constituents who elected them should mobilize to demand accountability.
Senate Democrats opting to support breaking the filibuster seem to be acting out of self-interest. A select few will prioritize personal gain over national welfare, and this betrayal will certainly not be forgotten.
