San Francisco, United States:

Apple has raised concerns about a pornography app available for iPhones in the European Union, stating that it poses a risk to children. This app was able to bypass Apple’s App Store and gain access to iPhones through an alternative marketplace, in compliance with new digital rules in the EU.

In the past, Apple had maintained strict control over the App Store as the only platform for digital content on its devices. However, following pressure from the EU, Apple started allowing users to access alternative app stores for purchasing apps.

Although the App Store prohibits pornographic content, the Hot Tub app was made available on AltStore PAL, one of these alternative marketplaces.

AltStore claimed that Hot Tub was the “first Apple-approved porn app,” passing through Apple’s review process for security and functionality.

Apple expressed deep concerns about the potential safety risks posed by hardcore pornographic apps, particularly to young users in the EU. The company clarified that it does not endorse or approve of the Hot Tub app.

Last year, Apple faced accusations of violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the EU, prompting the company to make changes to comply with the regulations, including allowing EU developers to use alternative app stores.

AltStore PAL, created by Riley Testut, was launched as an alternative to the App Store in the EU, welcoming all apps but particularly focusing on smaller, indie developers who face restrictions on the App Store.

Initially, AltStore PAL charged users an annual subscription fee, but it became free after receiving a grant from Epic Games, a company known for challenging Apple’s control over the App Store.

Apple highlighted that it is required by the European Commission to allow apps like Hot Tub to be distributed through marketplaces like AltStore and Epic, even if they do not prioritize user safety.

Apple emphasized the risks associated with “sideloading” apps from sources other than the App Store, citing concerns about deceptive and harmful content.
