The Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) has recently unveiled exciting changes to its acclaimed Core Residency Program for visual artists and critics. Originally established in 1982, the program has undergone enhancements to further support emerging artists in their creative endeavors. Now spanning a two-year period, the Core Residency offers fellowships to up-and-coming artists and critical writers seeking to cultivate a sustainable artistic practice. Each selected fellow will receive a generous stipend of $100,000 ($50,000 per year) along with a health stipend over the course of 23 months. The residency term for the upcoming cohort will run from September 2025 to July 2027.

In addition to financial support, fellows will benefit from a dedicated studio space and regular visits from esteemed artists and curators. They will also enjoy a substantial discount on classes offered at the MFAH’s Glassell School of Art. Furthermore, fellows have the option to request access to various studios at Glassell, including those specialized in painting, printmaking, digital and film photography, sculpture, jewelry, and ceramics. Moreover, fellows will have the opportunity to explore the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, access its galleries and collections, as well as visit its two house museums showcasing American and European decorative arts. Additionally, fellows will be granted borrowing privileges at the MFAH’s Hirsch Library and the Fondren Library at Rice University.

The Core Residency Program encourages international applicants to apply, with a preference given to artists or critics based in Harris County when qualifications are equally matched. A panel of esteemed arts professionals will review submissions and select up to four Core Fellows based on the strength of their work and the potential impact of the residency experience in Houston, Texas, on their artistic practice.
