McKillop isn’t the only one noticing a change in consumer preferences. Designers indicate that there is an increasing trend in demand for TV trays and versatile tables overall. “Clients desire spaces that mirror their actual daily routines—enjoying binge-watching their favorite shows with snacks in hand, or managing work tasks from their living rooms,” explains interior designer Lauren Carlucci from Lauren Carlucci Studio. “TV trays are all about simplicity and practicality, and currently, individuals seek comfort without sacrificing elegance. The resurgence is focused on transforming that concept into a stunning, multifunctional piece that enhances everyday experiences.”
Theresa Ory from Theresa Ory Interiors has also recognized an increase in similar inquiries. “About half of our upscale residential clients prefer to enjoy weeknight meals on their sofas rather than at a dining table,” Ory notes. “On one hand, this is surprising, yet on the other, it’s completely reasonable due to the convenience it provides.”
So, what attributes make an excellent TV tray? According to McKillop, it’s a blend of function and style. Her butler tray design can detach and function independently, whether placed atop an ottoman, coffee table, or kitchen island. “I intentionally designed it with a subtle edge to allow it to serve as a work surface for tasks like writing or making calls from the couch,” she remarks. “Traditional TV trays often prioritized folding over aesthetics; mine is designed to be showcased as a beautiful piece of furniture,” she adds.
For Carlucci, the focus is on selecting TV trays made from enduring materials—such as oak, walnut, leather, or brass—combined with elegant, sculptural shapes. “This lends a sense of permanence to a tray table. It’s crafted to be a part of your living space rather than something that gets stored away,” she advises. Both Carlucci and McKillop suggest an ideal height of approximately 24 inches, making it slightly above sofa seat height but low enough to comfortably hold a laptop, drink, or plate.
