A large number of Argentina fans have initiated a petition calling for the FIFA World Cup final to be replayed, citing “controversial” and “corrupt” officiating as the reason. Argentina, known as La Albiceleste, missed the chance to become the third nation to win back-to-back World Cups after losing 1-0 to Spain at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

A striking detail from the match is that the South American team did not manage a single shot on target during the 120 minutes. Moreover, they played with only ten men for over 30 minutes after Enzo Fernandez was sent off with a second yellow card.

A supporter named Gisela Sanchez started a petition on Change.org, claiming that referee Slavko Vincic affected the match’s result and is requesting FIFA to consider a rematch. At the time of writing, the petition had garnered more than 82,000 signatures.

“The recent final between Argentina and Spain was tarnished by the controversial and corrupt performance of the referee who, according to video evidence, was bought to influence the match’s outcome,” Sanchez wrote. “It is a monumental disappointment for the players, coaches, and, above all, for the fans who crave to see a game decided by talent and dedication on the pitch and not by rigged refereeing decisions.”

“If we allow corruption to go unnoticed on this global stage, we are setting a bad example for future generations of athletes and fans. Therefore, we ask Fifa to review these incidents with seriousness and transparency, and to consider replaying the final – this time without the influence of a corrupt referee.”

This is not a unique occurrence. After Argentina’s victory over France in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, over 200,000 French fans signed a petition demanding a replay due to concerns over referee Szymon Marciniak’s officiating.

FIFA investigating Argentina’s behaviour after World Cup final defeat

Aside from the petition, FIFA has commenced disciplinary proceedings following a post-match brawl that erupted after Sunday’s final. A BBC report indicated that Argentina is under investigation for the conduct of its players post-match.

Upon the final whistle declaring Spain as world champions, altercations ensued between Argentina’s team and the Spanish players and staff.

Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes were central to the conflict. Molina was seen throwing a punch at Rodri, while Paredes shoved Eric Garcia and forcefully pushed Gavi to the ground.

The BBC report further mentions that any player found guilty in the brawl could face suspension, and the Argentine Football Federation (AFA) might also be fined.
