Arkansas Parents Sentenced to 70 Years for Leaving Toddler to Die in Hot Car

Two Arkansas parents, Deja and Justin Rollins, have been handed a 70-year prison sentence for the tragic death of their 3-year-old son, Jay’Dien Rollins. The couple left their four other children, ages 2, 4, 7, and 10, locked inside a hot car while rushing Jay’Dien to a children’s hospital in Little Rock on July 7, 2024.

Prosecutors described the case as one of the most disturbing they have ever seen, with the 3-year-old succumbing to severe malnutrition. This prompted an investigation into the welfare of the other children in the family.

Prosecuting attorney Will Jones emphasized the importance of protecting children and holding those who harm them accountable. He stated, “There is no greater responsibility, and we will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that those who harm a child are held fully accountable.”

Deja, 28, and Justin, 30, left their children in the car outside Arkansas Children’s Hospital while their sick toddler received urgent medical treatment. The couple failed to disclose the location of the car to authorities, leading to a report of child abuse and neglect.

Despite being treated for heat exhaustion at the hospital, Jay’Dien tragically passed away the following day. The surviving children were also found to have suffered abuse, with one child showing signs of ongoing physical injuries.

Justin Rollins, 30, also received the seven-decade sentence after pleading guilty to murder.

Authorities also discovered a malnourished dog at the couple’s home, which was taken into the custody of Jacksonville Animal Services. Deja and Justin pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree domestic battery.
