The River North neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois, is currently experiencing a wave of violent robberies targeting mainly intoxicated individuals. Police are warning residents to be cautious following at least four incidents between June 16 and July 6, where one to three African American males have been involved in beating and robbing people in the area.

The suspects have been approaching individuals who appear to be drunk, befriending them, and then stealing their belongings while assaulting them. These incidents have been occurring during the early morning hours when bars and restaurants are closing, making it easier for the perpetrators to target vulnerable individuals.

One victim, Tori Ledzema, shared her harrowing experience with FOX 32, detailing how she was attacked by four individuals wearing ski masks while on her way to Pilates at 5:30 a.m. The assailants forcibly pushed her to the ground and held a gun to her head, demanding access to her phone and Cash App. Ledzema suffered a sprained neck during the robbery, highlighting the brutality of these attacks.

Despite police efforts to track down the suspects by obtaining fingerprints from the car used in the robberies, no arrests have been made yet. Former FBI special agent Jonathan Gilliam emphasized the importance of securing personal devices like phones, as perpetrators are increasingly targeting access to banking apps and accounts rather than physical cash.

Gilliam warned that attackers may use force to coerce victims into revealing passcodes or transferring money through mobile apps. With the prevalence of digital banking and online transactions, it is crucial for individuals to safeguard their personal information and be vigilant in public spaces, especially during late hours.

The recent spate of violent robberies in River North serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by opportunistic criminals targeting vulnerable individuals. Residents are advised to remain alert, travel in groups, and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities to prevent further incidents in the neighborhood. Stay safe and stay cautious in light of these troubling developments.
