Mario Munoz Sentenced to Seven Years in Prison for Arson and Assault
A Logan Square man, Mario Munoz, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to arson and assaulting a police officer. The 34-year-old pleaded guilty to aggravated arson and received a six-year sentence from Judge Aleksandra Gillespie. An additional one-year term was added for an unrelated case where Munoz admitted to battering a peace officer.
The incident took place on October 11, 2023, around 3:43 a.m. when Munoz allegedly set fire to a hay bale on a porch in the 2200 block of West Roscoe, causing damage to the floor and a column. The homeowner managed to extinguish the fire before it spread further.
Surveillance footage captured images of the suspect, leading to Munoz’s identification. A resident in Roscoe Village spotted Munoz near Addison and Hoyne days later and alerted the authorities. Officers stopped Munoz, captured images of him on their body cameras, and compared them to the video evidence of the arson. He was apprehended later that day.
In addition to the arson he pleaded guilty to, Munoz was also accused of decapitating inflatable Halloween figures outside a home in the 4100 block of North Maplewood, an incident caught on camera.
Broader Pattern of Arsons
At the time of Munoz’s arrest, Alderman Matt Martin (47th) warned residents that Munoz was a suspect in a series of arsons involving Halloween decorations outside homes. Police believed that at least eight incidents, including a house fire on the 3600 block of North Hoyne that started with a decorative hay bale being set on fire, were connected. However, Munoz was only charged in relation to one of the fires.
