Naomi Osaka recently reflected on her fourth-round match against Aryna Sabalenka at Indian Wells this week. The former World No. 1 suffered a defeat in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, against the Belarusian player.
Osaka made her comeback to the WTA tour after a short break, following her withdrawal from the Australian Open due to an abdominal injury in January. Despite reaching the third round at the Australian Open, the Japanese star faced challenges in her match against Sabalenka.
During her post-match press conference, Osaka analyzed her performance and mentioned how she felt tricked by Sabalenka’s constant grunts between rallies. She admitted to being flat-footed at times and not anticipating the ball effectively on the court.
“It definitely felt like playing her for the first time. I think, like, obviously I could watch her on TV or whatever, but in reality, it’s very different. I also feel like I was a little, like, flat-footed sometimes, because I expected the ball to be coming harder but then it didn’t. She grunts the same way for every ball. I was, like, Oh, my God, she tricked me (smiling),” Osaka said.
This was the second meeting between Sabalenka and Osaka on the tour, with Osaka emerging victorious in their first encounter at the 2018 US Open. While Osaka has previously won the BNP Paribas Open in 2018, Sabalenka has yet to secure a title in Indian Wells despite reaching the finals in 2023 and 2025.
Looking ahead, Osaka expressed her excitement about competing in the Miami Open this month. Despite facing setbacks and injuries on the WTA tour, the four-time Grand Slam champion emphasized the importance of staying positive and learning from each experience.
“I think I’m at an age now where I just have to, I’m at the ripe age of 28, that, I don’t know, I just have to take every day, like today obviously I didn’t win, but I learned a lot. I had a lot of fun, and I didn’t hurt myself. So that’s a W for me,” Osaka stated.
Having come close to winning the Miami Open in 2022, Osaka is determined to make a strong impact at the event this year. Despite a challenging start to 2026, she remains optimistic about her performance and looks forward to competing in all the Grand Slam tournaments.
“I’m lucky that I’m able to play in Miami. I’m going to be seeded there. It’s quite different from last year, and yeah, I just want to continue doing well. Yeah, I look forward to all the Grand Slams, like you know. So it will be a cool year,” she added.
Osaka’s journey in 2026 has seen its ups and downs, but she remains focused on regaining her form and making a significant impact on the tour. With her determination and resilience, Osaka is poised to overcome challenges and showcase her talent on the court.
In conclusion, Naomi Osaka’s resilience and positive mindset set the stage for an exciting season ahead. As she prepares to compete in the Miami Open and other prestigious tournaments, fans can expect to witness her remarkable skills and competitive spirit on display.
