The United States and Russia Begin Peace Negotiations
The recent announcement of peace negotiations between the United States and Russia has sent shockwaves through the geopolitical landscape, surprising many around the world.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been vocal in his opposition to negotiations that exclude Ukraine. He has called for robust security guarantees, refused to sign agreements ceding mineral rights to the US, and made demands for the establishment of a European army. Zelensky has also urged the US to maintain its support and insisted on Russia reverting to pre-war borders.
European leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, Kaja Kallas, and politicians from Germany, France, and the UK, have expressed strong reservations about the negotiations, with some even vowing not to cooperate with the plan.
However, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has shown support for the peace process, urging Europeans to stop complaining and align with the negotiations.
Key Players in the Negotiations
Both former President Donald J. Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have appointed top-tier officials to lead their respective negotiating teams.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed his negotiating team, which includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Notably absent from the list is Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special Ukraine envoy.

Marco Rubio, once a staunch supporter of Ukraine, has shifted to a more skeptical position aligned with Trump’s views. CIA Director John Ratcliffe has emphasized the risks of the conflict in Ukraine leading to a confrontation with a nuclear-armed nation.
Michael Waltz, who visited Kiev and voted in favor of providing aid to Ukraine, brings valuable experience to the negotiating table. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, praised by Trump for his negotiation skills, recently returned from Moscow after securing the release of an American citizen.

Russia’s Negotiating Team
Putin has assembled a team of experienced negotiators to represent Russia in the talks. The team includes Yuri Ushakov, Sergei Naryshkin, and Kirill Dmitriev, all well-versed in diplomacy and international relations.

The inclusion of Dmitriev, known for his ties to the US and financial expertise, highlights Putin’s willingness to adapt in negotiations with the unconventional US president.
As the peace negotiations progress, the world watches with anticipation to see how these high-stakes talks will shape the future of US-Russian relations and the conflict in Ukraine.
