Sound Ventures Invests in AI Startup World Labs

Ashton Kutcher’s venture capital firm, Sound Ventures, co-led by general partners Guy Oseary and Effie Epstein, is making a bold move by betting on artificial intelligence. One of their recent investments is in Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs, a startup focused on developing “large world models” that can understand and interact with the 3D world. Li, a renowned Stanford professor known as the “Godmother of AI,” has already secured $230 million in funding from investors like a16z, NEA, and Radical Ventures, valuing the company at over $1 billion. Sound Ventures is confident in the potential of this AI venture, especially with its target markets in the gaming and entertainment industries.

Sound Ventures’ AI fund, established last year with a capital of $265 million, has also made investments in other prominent AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Hugging Face. Kutcher mentioned that they have not sold any of their shares in OpenAI, indicating their belief in the company’s future growth. The team at Sound Ventures is not just interested in software-based AI technologies but also in startups exploring new physical forms and operating systems optimized for AI applications.

One notable investment by Sound Ventures is in Rabbit, an AI hardware startup founded by Jesse Lyu. The team sees the potential of AI hardware in revolutionizing user experiences, with Epstein emphasizing the importance of software capabilities over physical form factors. She highlighted the concept of a software that learns user preferences and takes actions autonomously, potentially disrupting established players in the tech industry.

Moreover, Sound Ventures is eyeing a collaboration with legendary Apple designer Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on a new AI device. While discussions are ongoing, Kutcher expressed optimism about the groundbreaking innovations that could emerge from this partnership. He believes that a significant breakthrough in AI technology is on the horizon and will have a profound impact on society.
