Asian streaming platform Viu has recently introduced a new feature called Viu Shorts, which offers bite-sized dramas in various Asian languages. This new vertical video section on the Viu mobile app provides microdramas in Chinese, Korean, Thai, and Indonesian, with episodes lasting one to three minutes each. Viu Shorts complements the platform’s existing library of premium long-form series and films.
Janice Lee, CEO of Viu and managing director of PCCW Media Group, expressed excitement about the launch of Viu Shorts, stating, “This new feature brings viewers fast-paced storytelling in a 1–3 minute episodic format, perfectly complementing Viu’s extensive offering of premium long-form series and movies.”
Viu Shorts operates on a freemium model, allowing subscribers unlimited access to the full microdrama library while offering select content to free users. The platform features a variety of genres including romance, thriller, variety, and fantasy, all subtitled in local languages. Viu has partnered with microdrama distributors Rising Joy and KT Studiogenie, as well as production companies like China Huace, 1001 Frames, and Youhug Media.
Some of the launch titles on Viu Shorts include “Pear Perfect,” a story about a woman entangled with a playboy involved in fighting human trafficking, and “The Most Painful Kiss in the World,” which follows a protagonist with a unique ability. Other offerings include the revenge thriller “My Husband Murdered Me” and the occult romance “Becoming the Wife of a Dark Cult Overlord.”
The updated Viu app with the Shorts section is now available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Viu, owned by PCCW, operates in various regions across Asia, the Middle East, and South Africa. In a strategic move, Viu partnered with HBO Max in 2025 to offer a unified subscription package for customers in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
This new addition of Viu Shorts brings a fresh and engaging way for viewers to enjoy quick and captivating storytelling in multiple languages, further enhancing the diverse content offerings on the Viu platform.
