Using Hypnosis to Reduce Menopausal Hot Flushes

Hot flushes are a very common symptom around the time of the menopause

Menopausal hot flushes, experienced by up to 80 per cent of women, can be a challenging symptom of the menopause. These sudden feelings of overheating can disrupt daily life and sleep patterns. While traditional treatments like dietary changes, hormone replacement therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy are available, they may not work for everyone. However, a new study suggests that hypnosis could be a promising alternative for managing hot flushes.

Gary Elkins, a researcher at Baylor University, and his team have developed a six-week home hypnosis program aimed at reducing the frequency and severity of hot flushes in menopausal women. Participants listen to 20-minute hypnotic audio recordings daily, designed to induce relaxation and create mental imagery of coolness.

In a study involving 250 postmenopausal women who experienced frequent hot flushes, those who followed the hypnosis program reported a 53 per cent reduction in hot flush scores after six weeks. In comparison, a sham group listening to white noise experienced a 41 per cent reduction. The benefits of hypnosis were sustained even after the intervention period, with the hypnosis group reporting a 61 per cent overall improvement at 12 weeks.

Elkins believes that at-home hypnosis could be a convenient and cost-effective intervention for managing menopausal hot flushes. While the exact mechanisms behind hypnosis’s effectiveness are not fully understood, research suggests that it can help the brain rewire itself and modify its connections, leading to improvements in various symptoms like pain and anxiety.

Overall, this study highlights the potential of hypnosis as a non-invasive and accessible way to alleviate menopausal symptoms and improve quality of life for women experiencing hot flushes.
