Prabal Gurung made a significant impact at the Met Gala, crafting nine distinctive designs for the occasion. Among these creations were a gown for the celebrated Angela Bassett and another for Princess Gauravi Kumari. His designs for that event, as well as those in his recent Atelier collection, steer clear of heavy ornamentation. Only a third of the collection features corsets, and just two designs have the expansive volumes typical of princess gowns. Gurung remarked, “I always say my job as a designer, especially when it comes to evening, is to offer options—options that fit in my world—so she can choose. Not every woman wants a ball gown.” He added that this philosophy is deeply influenced by his experiences with Bill Blass and his admiration for Geoffrey Beene, Yves Saint Laurent, and Armani, who all embody a quiet confidence in their designs.
The fall collection by Gurung includes a T-shirt-like dress that allows one to enter a room with ease. It features soft curves, a subtle sparkle, and sheer short sleeves, offering an effortless elegance that is often absent in evening attire. Gurung describes this look as “streamlined,” balancing romance with simplicity through details like shoulder treatments, flowing trains, or bows.
