A Tragic Incident: 12-Year-Old Boy Killed by Distracted Driver in Aurora
A heartbreaking tragedy occurred on Saturday when a 12-year-old boy was struck and killed by a distracted driver in a crosswalk in Aurora, according to police reports.
The young boy was riding his scooter across East Iliff Avenue near South Wheel Park Circle, south of Horseshoe Park, when he was hit by a 19-year-old driver who failed to stop for the crossing signal, as per a news release from the Aurora Police Department.
Despite being in a marked crosswalk and activating the crossing signal that halts all traffic on Iliff, the 12-year-old was fatally injured in the collision. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by police in an 8:15 p.m. update.
While the 19-year-old driver remains unnamed, Aurora authorities anticipate pressing charges against the individual in the near future for their role in the accident.
Police emphasized the importance of driver attentiveness and urged the public to refrain from distractions while behind the wheel in order to prevent such devastating incidents. “Put your phones down, avoid distractions while driving, and stay focused on the road. Your life, and the lives of others, depend on it,” stated the news release.
Following the incident, investigators dedicated Saturday evening to reconstructing the crash scene in an effort to ascertain all contributing factors to the tragic event. While it remains unclear whether speed or alcohol played a role, ongoing investigations seek to uncover the full scope of circumstances surrounding the collision.
