Australian field hockey player Tom Craig has been handed a 12-month suspension after allegedly purchasing cocaine during the Paris Olympics. The ban was imposed by Hockey Australia following an investigation by the governing body’s integrity unit. If Craig meets certain behavioral requirements, the second six months of the suspension will be suspended.

The suspension will prohibit Craig from participating in any matches organized by Hockey Australia, including the upcoming Hockey One League and FIH Pro League seasons. However, he will still have access to the athlete support services provided by the governing body.

In a statement released by Hockey Australia, it was stated that Craig will be required to complete mandatory training and education programs as part of his sanction. Despite the suspension, Craig will remain eligible for selection in the 2025 National Men’s Hockey Squad.

The alleged incident took place after Australia was eliminated by the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of the men’s Olympic field hockey tournament. Craig was released without being charged but received a warning from a French judge.

Craig publicly apologized for his actions, taking full responsibility and expressing remorse for his mistake. He acknowledged that his actions were his own and did not reflect the values of his family, teammates, friends, sport, or the Australian Olympic team.

Prior to the suspension, Craig was part of the Australian team that won silver at Tokyo 2020 and gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. His suspension will take effect from September 9, 2024.
