Cleaning hacks have been all the rage on TikTok, with influencers sharing various tips and tricks for keeping your home spotless. However, experts are now warning that some of these hacks could actually be putting your health and safety at risk.

One of the most dangerous trends circulating on TikTok involves mixing common household cleaning supplies. While it may seem like a budget-friendly way to get your home clean, combining certain chemicals can have serious consequences. For example, many people are aware that mixing bleach and vinegar creates chlorine gas, which can lead to respiratory issues, chest pain, lung damage, and even death.

Despite this knowledge, some cleaning influencers are still promoting risky combinations, such as bleach and lemon juice. Lemon juice is an acid, just like vinegar, and when mixed with bleach, it can trigger a similar chemical reaction that is harmful to your health.

Another popular cleaning hack involves combining baking soda and vinegar to clean drains. While this method is effective, storing the mixture in a closed container can cause it to build up pressure and potentially explode. Even pouring the two ingredients down a drain separately can create pressure that damages the pipes.

Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar is another dangerous combination that is being recommended on TikTok. Mixing these two chemicals creates peracetic acid, which can cause skin burns, eye damage, and respiratory problems.

According to health and safety expert Derek Bruce, some of these cleaning hacks are nothing short of chemical warfare in your own home. Mixing the wrong products can create lethal gases or trigger explosions. It’s important to always check with official health and safety guidance before trying any chemical mix, no matter how popular it may be on social media.

In addition to the risks posed by chemical combinations, some cleaning hacks also present a fire hazard. One TikTok video, for example, shows a user cleaning an air fryer by putting a dishwasher tablet in the drawer and running the appliance. However, running an air fryer with water in it can damage the appliance and potentially cause a fire due to the shorting of electrical components.

It’s crucial to follow manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning appliances and to avoid risky cleaning hacks that could put your health and safety in jeopardy. While TikTok may be a fun platform for sharing creative cleaning tips, it’s important to prioritize safety above all else when it comes to household chores.
