Chinese Tech Giant Baidu Beats Market Expectations Despite Drop in Revenue
BEIJING — Baidu, the Chinese tech giant, reported a 3% annual drop in third-quarter revenue on Thursday, with a total revenue of $4.78 billion for the quarter ending on Sept. 30. Despite the decline in revenue, the company managed to beat market expectations, thanks to the growth in its artificial intelligence (AI) cloud business.
Net income for the period saw a 14% increase to $1.09 billion, indicating a positive trend for the company. Baidu attributed a 12% surge in non-online marketing revenue, amounting to $1.1 billion, to the strong performance of its AI cloud business.
However, the company’s U.S.-traded shares experienced a 2.3% decline in premarket trading following the release of its results at 08:42 a.m. ET.
Analysts’ Expectations vs. Actual Performance
Analysts had projected Baidu to report a revenue of $4.63 billion and a net income of $857.17 million for the quarter, according to LSEG estimates. The actual results surpassed these estimates, with the company reporting a revenue of 34.45 billion yuan ($4.75 billion) and a net income of 6.68 billion yuan for the third quarter of 2023.
Business Operations and Market Overview
Baidu, based in Beijing, is known for operating one of the major web browser search engines in China, as well as a popular maps app and cloud computing services. The company generates a significant portion of its revenue from online marketing.
Despite challenges in online ad spend from small and medium-sized businesses, Baidu’s AI cloud business showed promising growth, offsetting the weakness in online marketing. CEO Robin Li highlighted the success of the company’s Ernie generative AI model and chatbot, which have gained widespread market recognition.
Li emphasized Baidu’s commitment to an AI-focused strategy, stating that the company remains confident in its long-term trajectory. The Ernie chatbot, positioned as a local alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT in China, has garnered 430 million users and continues to drive innovation in AI-driven solutions.
Future Growth and Expansion
Baidu sees generative AI as a key driver of revenue growth in its AI cloud business, with a revenue contribution of 11% in the third quarter. The company is also set to launch its Xiaodu AI Glasses in the first half of next year, leveraging Ernie’s AI capabilities and Baidu’s mapping and search functions.
Additionally, Baidu announced a management rotation, with Junjie He appointed as the interim Chief Financial Officer, signaling a strategic shift in leadership to drive further growth and innovation.
Looking ahead, Baidu is exploring international expansion opportunities for its Apollo Go robotaxi business, which reported a 20% year-on-year increase in rides during the third quarter. The company remains optimistic about the potential of fully autonomous ride-hailing services and is actively pursuing opportunities for global expansion.
Overall, Baidu’s strong performance in the AI cloud business and strategic initiatives signal a promising future for the company as it continues to drive innovation and create value in the evolving tech landscape.
