After making his debut women’s show for Balenciaga four months ago, Pierpaolo Piccioli’s vision for the iconic fashion house is becoming clearer. In a luxurious home gym setting and on the streets of Paris, Piccioli revealed his larger agenda for the brand, emphasizing the fusion of tech-wear with couture for both men and women.
In a recent interview, Piccioli expressed his belief that streetwear is not dead, but rather evolving. He aims to redefine the traditional hoodie and oversized trainer aesthetic that Balenciaga has become known for under previous creative director, Demna. Piccioli’s approach focuses on innovation and putting the human body at the center of his designs, blending functionality with high fashion.
The collection showcases a range of technical garments such as bodysuits, leggings, and revamped Balenciaga trainers that are lightweight and designed for performance. Piccioli emphasizes the importance of each piece having a purpose and justifying its value, moving away from purely decorative fashion to functional clothing that allows the body to move freely.
Drawing inspiration from Balenciaga’s archives, Piccioli reinvents classic silhouettes with modern twists. The men’s camel coat, based on Cristobal Balenciaga’s own design, features a square cut that adds a contemporary edge. Off-the-shoulder necklines, trailing cape-back gowns, and leather jackets pay homage to the brand’s heritage while being reimagined for the present day.
One standout piece from the collection is the revival of the tall riding helmet hat first introduced by Nicolas Ghesquière in 2006. Piccioli’s version takes on a more casual look, resembling a baseball cap when paired with a sculpted scarf—a nod to the intersection of high fashion and streetwear.
In addition to his reinterpretation of Balenciaga’s iconic styles, Piccioli incorporates his observations of modern dressing habits and collaborations with other designers. Sequins adorn glamorous evening wear, while collaborations with Manolo Blahnik and the NBA add a contemporary edge to the collection.
Overall, Piccioli’s vision for Balenciaga blends tradition with innovation, creating a collection that is both timeless and relevant to the current fashion landscape. With a focus on tech-wear, functionality, and reinterpreted classics, Piccioli is setting a new direction for the historic fashion house.
