In 2022, Baz Luhrmann’s film “Elvis” starring Austin Butler brought a touch of glamour to Elvis Presley’s legacy. Now, the new film “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” is out in IMAX, adding a whimsical twist to the iconic musician’s story. This film, described by Luhrmann as a blend of documentary and concert elements, captures Presley at the International Hotel in 1969, starting a seven-year residency at the age of 34.
The majority of the film’s 90-minute runtime is filled with footage from MGM’s recordings for early ’70s concert films, which had been forgotten in a salt mine in Kansas. The audience gets a glimpse of Presley in rehearsals and on stage, performing his classic hits like “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock,” as well as new songs like “Burning Love,” covers such as “Yesterday” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and gospel tracks like “How Great Thou Art” and “Oh Happy Day.” This showcase highlights the versatility of Presley’s musical style and the adoration of his fans, who fervently follow him wherever he goes. Additionally, it showcases his endearing goofiness, both on and off stage.
Luhrmann shared insights into the making of the film, including the collaboration with his team and the creative process behind the project. When asked about the film’s title, Luhrmann revealed that it was a collaborative effort with his team, coming up with various ideas before settling on the acronym EPiC, which stands for “Elvis Presley in Concert.”
Peter Jackson, known for his work on the Beatles documentary “Get Back,” assisted Luhrmann in restoring the found footage for the film. Jackson’s documentary served as an inspiration for Luhrmann, showcasing the power of music and performance in preserving a legendary artist’s legacy.
“EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” offers viewers a unique and immersive experience, blending archival footage with modern technology to bring Presley’s iconic performances to life on the big screen. The film pays homage to Presley’s musical legacy and captures the essence of his electrifying stage presence, ensuring that his music continues to resonate with audiences for generations to come.
