BBC Studios Kids & Family has exciting news for young viewers, as they announce the development of a new animated series targeted at 8 to 12-year-olds. Teaming up with Blink Industries, the two companies are set to launch “Children Vs Battle SuperStars” (working title) as part of a two-year first-look deal. The initial details of the show will be unveiled at the upcoming Annecy Animation Festival.
The premise of the 22-episode series revolves around a martial arts tournament set in a fantastical, contemporary world. Ordinary children will take on larger-than-life “Battle SuperStars” in a showdown of epic proportions. The creative minds behind the show, Remus Buznea and Kyriaki Kyriakou (also known as Kiki), bring their experience from working on popular projects like “Rick and Morty” bumpers, “Primal,” and the acclaimed short film “Dateless.”
Buznea and Kyriakou shared that the inspiration for the series stemmed from their own experiences of being defeated by children in online fighting games. This led them to explore themes of competition and humorously deconstruct martial arts genre conventions through a tournament narrative.
Describing the show as “comedic and quirky, blending the ordinary with the bizarre,” Grainne McNamara, VP of development for live action and animation at BBC Studios Kids & Family, highlighted the unique characters that viewers can expect to meet. From the trio of friends taking on the Battle SuperStars to a mysterious fighter adding an air of intrigue, the series promises a diverse and engaging cast.
Blink Industries, a multi-award-winning production company, will be at the helm of producing the series. Benjamin Lole, Head of Animation and Executive Producer at Blink, commended the creative vision of Buznea and Kyriakou, noting their distinctive humor and visual style. He expressed excitement about creating a show that can stand out among anime giants like “Naruto,” “Dragon Ball,” and “Pokémon.”
With its blend of humor, action, and unique storytelling, “Children Vs Battle SuperStars” is poised to capture the imagination of young audiences and bring a fresh perspective to the animated series landscape. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting collaboration between BBC Studios Kids & Family and Blink Industries.
