BBC Studios has announced that it will be ending its local production operations in India and has signed an exclusive multi-year partnership with Banijay Asia to adapt its formats specifically for the Indian audience.
The agreement grants Banijay Asia exclusive rights to BBC Studios’ array of unscripted and scripted format catalog in India. This collaboration will come into effect once BBC Studios fulfills its existing production commitments in the region.
BBC Studios, previously known for successful adaptations like “Criminal Justice” and “The Office,” had established itself as a conduit between British storytelling and Indian sensibilities.
Banijay Asia, a collaboration between Banijay Entertainment and founder-CEO Deepak Dhar, will utilize its local knowledge to infuse BBC’s formats with an Indian twist for both television broadcasters and digital streaming platforms. With a proven track record in adapting international shows like “Masterchef,” “Big Brother,” and “Temptation Island” for Indian viewers, Banijay Asia is poised to bring fresh and engaging content to the market.
Notable titles from BBC Studios’ format library include popular shows such as “The 1% Club,” “Dancing with the Stars,” “Weakest Link,” “Great Bake Off,” as well as scripted series like “The Office” and “Ghosts.”
Jacob DeBoer, executive VP Global Entertainment for BBC Studios, commended Banijay Asia’s creative prowess and local expertise in revitalizing BBC Studios’ diverse format catalog for the Indian audience. He also expressed gratitude for the contributions of BBC Studios’ Mumbai team, highlighting their involvement since the inception of “Jhalak Dikhla Ja” in 2006.
Deepak Dhar of Banijay Asia emphasized that the partnership aligns with their commitment to delivering high-quality content that resonates across various platforms. Known for successful adaptations like “The Night Manager” and “Call My Agent: Bollywood,” Banijay Asia continues to solidify its position in the Indian content landscape.
Matt Forde, MD Global Entertainment for BBC Studios, reiterated the company’s strategy of bringing BBC Studios’ popular entertainment shows to global audiences through collaborations with industry leaders. He praised Banijay Asia for its dedication to storytelling and adapting hit shows that make a significant impact in India. The anticipation is high for the innovative approaches Banijay Asia will bring to BBC Studios’ renowned intellectual properties.
