Hilary Harkness: Exploring Fantastical Realities Through Art

Renowned artist Hilary Harkness is a master of creating intricate worlds on small canvases, where she delves into the depths of human nature and history. Her recent exhibition at PPOW Gallery in New York City showcased her hyperrealist, maximalist approach to painting, inviting viewers into a universe filled with beauty, darkness, and complexity.

Born in 1971, Harkness originally studied pre-med at UC Berkeley before discovering her passion for painting. Her early works often depicted labor and the complexities of power dynamics. One of her notable paintings, “Golden Gorge,” explored the American fascination with quick wealth during the gold rush era, highlighting the exploitation of those who failed to strike it rich.

Harkness’s art is a blend of history, fiction, and personal narratives. Her series featuring Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas delves into the iconic relationship between the two women, offering a unique perspective on their lives and dynamics. Through her paintings, Harkness weaves together stories of love, loss, and betrayal, drawing viewers into a world where reality and fantasy intertwine.

One of her most intriguing series, “Arabella Freeman,” explores a narrative of a White genderqueer Union soldier and a Black Union soldier’s family in Virginia during the 19th century. Inspired by her wife’s experiences and historical research, Harkness delves into themes of race, power, and identity, challenging viewers to confront their own perceptions and biases.

In addition to her painting, Harkness has recently delved into calligraphy, exploring the art of writing with a quill and ink. This new venture has added another dimension to her creative process, allowing her to connect with different artistic mediums and techniques.

As Harkness continues to evolve as an artist, she embraces the idea of constant growth and exploration. For her, the journey of creating art is a marathon, where each brushstroke and decision leads to new discoveries and insights. By remaining open to new experiences and challenges, she hopes to inspire others to embrace creativity and curiosity in their own lives.

Hilary Harkness’s art is a testament to the power of storytelling, imagination, and emotional depth. Through her work, she invites viewers to step into her world and explore the complexities of the human experience.
