Incoming Representative Sarah McBride, who is transgender, has recently made headlines for agreeing to follow House Speaker Mike Johnson’s policy regarding bathroom use on US Capitol premises. Despite her personal views on the matter, McBride stated, “I’m not here to fight about bathrooms. I’m here to fight for Delawareans and to bring down costs facing families.”

In a statement posted on X, McBride emphasized her commitment to serving her constituents and abiding by the rules outlined by Speaker Johnson, even if she may disagree with them. She expressed her dedication to preparing to represent Delaware in the 119th Congress and highlighted the importance of getting to know her future colleagues from both sides of the aisle.

Speaker Johnson issued a resolution on Wednesday morning, stating that all single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings, including restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms, are reserved for individuals of their biological sex. When asked about McBride’s gender identity, Johnson refrained from engaging in debates and emphasized the need to treat all individuals with dignity and respect.

Johnson further clarified his stance by asserting, “A man is a man, and a woman is a woman, and a man cannot become a woman.” Despite his firm beliefs, he reiterated the importance of respecting all individuals regardless of their gender identity.

The ongoing discussion surrounding bathroom use and gender identity underscores the complexities and sensitivities of the issue. As McBride prepares to take office in January, she remains focused on her primary goal of serving her constituents and addressing the pressing issues facing Delawareans. The upcoming session of Congress promises to be a challenging yet rewarding experience for McBride and her fellow colleagues, as they navigate various policy debates and legislative initiatives.
